Have you tried authentic sushi? Actually, it looks so different between Japan and United States.
Let me introduce you to authentic sushi that Japanese eat.
American Style Sushi
I have been seeing like this sushi that is including avocado, cream cheese, and spicy sauce over sushi rice and fish like salmon, and sometimes crunchy on the top.
Actually, Japanese like these sushi as American style. They tastes so good to be honest.
But unfortunately, I had never seen included avocado and cream cheese in the sushi for 19 years I was in Japan.
So, I just do not want you to be upset when you go to Japan to eat sushi cause they obviously look and taste different.
Authentic Sushi
When you go to Japan, you will see Two types of sushi.
Nigiri Sushi
We all know sushi that sliced fish is on the sushi rice. Japanese call this “Nigiri Zushi“.
There is also special sushi that we call “Gunkan” like sushi rice wrapped in seaweed and put see urchin, salmon roe, or something on the top.
Usually, sushi is including wasabi that is made from the root of the horseradish plant and has like a pungent spiciness. So, be careful to eat sushi in Japan especially with kids.
What is sushi rice?
It is a little bit sticky, soft, and room temperature rice with slight vinegar smell.
Recipe: Mix cooked white rice with vinegar while cooling.
Roll
Differences between Japanese and American sushi rolls.
- American sushi rolls are including avocado, cream cheese, or something that Japanese do not use at all.
- American sushi rolls are wrapped in rice, but Japanese one is wrapped in seaweed.
Another type of sushi
Sashimi
Sashimi is just thinly sliced fresh raw seafood.
Basically, perilla and daikon (white) radish are garnished with sashimi. If you eat sashimi with daikon radish or perilla in Japan, you may be seen as a connoisseur…🤔
This is the best match that sashimi is eaten with drinking Japanese sake 🍶 if you like to drink 😋
Hand roll
Hand roll is raw seafood and sushi rice wrapped in seaweed, but not look like rolls. It looks like ice cream corn.
The best thing about hand roll is that we can choose whatever you want to eat, and make it own yourself. All Japanese have experienced making hand rolls own themself at least once.
Chirashi
Chirashi sushi is some types of seafood (basic is shrimp, tuna, salmon), seaweed, Japanese style omelets and some vegetables mixed with the sushi rice together.
Japanese eat Chirashi sushi on every March 3 because the day is that known as Doll’s Day or Girls’ Day, is an annual traditional Japanese celebration, and it is for celebrating the health and happiness of female children and femininity in general.
Kaisendon
Basically, it is served a colorful assortment in one large bowl. It is including so many raw seafood on the sushi rice.
Inari
“Inari sushi” is sushi rice and sesame in “fried tofu pouches” which Japanese call “aburaage“. This is the most reasonably sushi and well known to the public.
“Sukeroku sushi is a set of Inari sushi and kanpyo roll which is dried gourd strips and Japanese style omelets in its roll.
You can find it at any like convenience stores and grocery stores.
Oshi sushi
“Oshi sushi” is that sushi rice and seafood like mackerel, shrimp or something put in the square box, then press from above. Japanese call it “Battera“, and if it is mackerel, we say “Saba Battera“. Saba means mackerel in Japanese.
